Tom Cruise, Medical Expert

“You don’t know the history of psychiatry. I do,” Cruise said.

The interview became more heated when Lauer, who said he knew people who had been helped by the attention-deficit disorder drug Ritalin, asked Cruise about the effects of the drug.

“Matt, Matt, you don’t even – you’re glib,” Cruise responded. “You don’t even know what Ritalin is. If you start talking about chemical imbalance, you have to evaluate and read the research papers on how they came up with these theories, Matt, OK. That’s what I’ve done.”

Oddly, this is one area where to an extent the $cientologists may have a case. Amphetamines were invented first, and then they went to some trouble to invent diseases that could be treated by them. Ritalin is just another form of amphetamine and ADD and ADHD are the latest invented diseases to “need” treating.

But their antipathy to psychiatry in general is, I agree, due to a marketing need not based on knowledge.

Or, we have always had people with ADD/ADHD before, but only now do we know that (a) this is a disorder, and (b) it can be treated with stuff like Ritalin. We didn’t go look for Ritalin, but AFAIK, we also weren’t looking for an antibiotic to treat bacterial infections when we found penicillin…

What I really liked is when Tom talked about how he has helped get people off of these meds and how “it’s worse than coming off heroin.” Has he never seen Basketball Diaries??? I’ve seen people come off Ritalin, Prozac, etc. It’s nothing like heroin. I think Tom needs to spend a little bit of time with Bobby & Whitney…see what hard drugs are actually like!

Oh no, she’s on her Bobby & Whitney kick.

LOL Did I ever act out the Whitney interview for you? “Show me the receipts! Where are the receipts from all these drugs I’m supposedly buying??” It really is one of my better acts, if I must say so myself (which apparently I must)!
