Fallen Icons

Next Generation has an article on five fallen icons of the gaming industry.

I’d say that the loss of Black Isle is the worst one of the bunch. I’m still waiting to play Fallout 3.

Oh, man, I loved Looking Glass games. I was lucky enough to have a spanking new Pentium in those days, so I could actually run them acceptably. But the acting in Terra Nova’s FMV cutscenes made me laugh. It was so bad!

I’m looking forward to Fallout 3, too. But I think a video card upgrade will be necessary judging by how Oblivion looks.

I would have to argue that they missed one. Kesmai Studios out of Virginia. Anyone who plays any of the massive multiplayer online games (MMOG) needs to thank the folks at Kesmai for their efforts in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Games like AirWarrior, Multiplayer Battletech, and Cyberstrike cut through the dense jungle of the nacent internet for gamers willing to pay $9, $6, or $4 an hour (depending on when they logged on to the old GEnie network). World War II online, Everquest, World of Warcraft, it’s likely none of them would exist today but for the efforts of the programmers at Kesmai.

I just bought a new Shuttle SFF box to be my new server. So my “new computer” is limited for a couple of years.

If Fallout 3 comes out before I can afford a new home system, I may have to pull some all nighters in the lab.
