I think this shows your rankings system is severely flawed. You seem to give very little weight to wins/losses and great weight to strength of schedule. That’s fine, but I think you overdid it. I don’t see how an 12-2 Oklahoma team can be ranked ahead of undefeated Utah. Nor how a team that loses every game like Washington (0-12) can be ranked 46 spots higher than undefeated teams like Mount Union or Sioux Falls. Perhaps a better example would be 0-12 Indiana St. ranked higher than a host of 10 win teams. Granted it’s harder to win against good teams, but seriously, is there that much of a difference between the teams Indiana St. plays versus the opponents of the teams with 10 teams yet are ranked lower?
I just think you give too little weight to wins and penalize too little for losses. I believe special weight should be given to teams that are undefeated, an Utah that beats all their opponents including 3 ranked teams has a claim to be the best in college football while a team like Oklahoma which lost twice already have proven themselves unworthy. You should rework your formula to make your results less dependent upon being in “good” conferences.
The quality of a team is judged based on both whom it played and how it preformed. A close loss to a good team can be better than a blow out win against a bad team. Likewise, a huge win against a good team is better than a squeaker against a bad team. To me this seems rather logical.
